Weeds, Pests and Diseases

Grapes are subject to attack from a wide range of pests and diseases.

The most effective control is through protective fungicide applications, though opening up the crop canopy can reduce disease pressures.

Viruses such as leafroll and ringspot can be minimized by ensuring that new vines are clean and that transmitting pests such as nematodes are not brought in with rootstocks.

Numerous insects and several mite species can attack grapes. Some, such as the grape berry moth are chronic pests. Most can be controlled using insecticides applied once economic spray threshold levels have been reached.
